Newcastle is a place of great variety, with pretty villages, rolling wooded countryside, traditional pubs, ancient churches and canals. The town centre itself, around the eighteenth century Guildhall, is a thriving collection of small, specialist shops and national names, with the busy outdoor market - dating from 1173 - at its heart. The traffic free centre has a pleasant relaxed atmosphere with its many cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants. At night the nightclubs, the range of eating places and the New Vic theatre make Newcastle a great venue for an evening out.
